چکیده

This paper concerns the problem of array shape tracking from clutter for a towed active sonar array. Although heading sensors can provide towed-array shape information, they are sometimes not sufficiently available or accurate to facilitate beamforming with low sidelobe levels necessary for detection of low-Doppler targets, especially in the presence of severe bottom reverberation. We propose an array shape tracking algorithm using multipath clutter returns from a sonar ping as a distributed source of opportunity in addition to observations from only two heading sensors. More specifically a maximum likelihood (ML) array shape calibration technique is devised that exploits the relationship between the spatial and Doppler frequencies of the clutter by fitting the reverberation snapshots from a single sub-CPI to the low rank spacetime clutter subspace. The ML estimates are then tracked using a Kalman filter, which incorporates the water-pulley model for array shape dynamics.

Enhanced Sonar Array Target Localization Using Time-Frequency Interference Phenomena

The ability of traditional active sonar processing methods to detect targets is often limited by clutter and reverberation from ocean environments. Similarly, multipath arrivals from radiating sources such as ships and submarines are received at sensors in passive sonar systems. Reverberation and multipath signals introduce constructive and destructive interference patterns in received spectrog...

Active Sonar Detection in Reverberation via Signal Subspace Extraction Algorithm

This paper presents a new algorithm called Signal Subspace Extraction (SSE) for detecting and estimating target echoes in reverberation. The new algorithm can be taken as an extension of the Principal Component Inverse (PCI) and maintains the benefit of PCI algorithm and moreover shows better performance due to a more reasonable reverberation model. In the SSE approach, a best low-rank estimate...

Track-Before-Detect for an Active Towed Array Sonar

Conventional active sonar processing systems typically reduce the sensor data from an intensity map to a pointmeasurement form via a detection thresholding process. This approach is often sufficient for detecting and tracking high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) targets but becomes more challenging for low SNR targets. Track-Before-Detect (TkBD) is an alternative tracking technique that supplies ra...

Modeling of active reverberation by time delay estimation

This paper explores the statistical properties of underwater reverberation present in active sonar systems. The interference to signal processing which results from reverberation can be extensive, and is particularly acute when the boundaries (surface, bottom) of the water column are nearby. Of particular interest are situations where there may be weak targets masked by reverberation dominating...

Experimental Comparison of High Duty Cycle and Pulsed Active Sonars in a Littoral Environment

Military sonars must detect, localize, classify, and track submarine threats from distances safely outside their circle of attack. However, conventional pulsed active sonars (PAS) have duty cycles on the order of one percent which means that 99% of the time, the track is out of date. In contrast, high duty cycle sonars (HDC) have duty cycles approaching 100% which enable near-continuous updates...
